What is happening now?
- Can each person speak, pause or leave without threat or punishment?
- Are limits being heard, even when they are not welcomed?
- Is anyone being pressured to explain, disclose or reconcile?
What are you hoping for?
- Is the aim clarity, repair, a decision, a boundary or something else?
- Does the other person need to agree for that aim to be met?
- Is the hoped-for outcome possible in the current conditions?
What would make the exchange more workable?
- Would time, distance or a different setting help?
- Would a trusted supporter or trained third party be appropriate?
- What boundary would need to be respected?
What else could happen next?
- Pause and return only if conditions change.
- State a limit without continuing the argument.
- Keep a record where accountability matters.
- Seek practical, organisational or specialist support.
This guide supports reflection. It is not a safety assessment or a substitute for legal, clinical, safeguarding or specialist advice.
